Festival of married couples : Celebrating KarwaChaut 2022.

India Know as the land of celebrations and festivals. And the celebration of festivals have already begun starting from Navaratri, Durga puja, Dussehra and now karwa Chaut. You must have heard of Karwa Chaut many a time, even you would have seen your mother fasting the whole day and then finally breaking the fast at night. Have you ever tried to understand the actual concept and meaning behind such rituals followed in the country?
Karwa Chaut the one day Hindu festival celebrated across the country, is the main festival of married couples , where the wife fasts the whole day for the long life of their husbands, the festival is generally celebrated on the Dark night of fore night (krishna paksha) in the Kartik month according to the Hindu calendar. Majorly celebrated in the Northern Side of the country including Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.


The word Karwa Chaut also has a meaning, is derived from 2 words karwa meaning earthen pot with a spout and ‘Chauth’ which means fourth, now you would have observed he significance of the earthen pot in the Indian culture, here on this day, women uses it in order offer water to the moon as part of the festival rituals. according to the old believes, this festival came into practise by women in order to pray the safety of there respective husbands who often used to stay away from their homes during wars. This festival is also celebrated in order to strengthen the family ties.

Women generally does “Nirjala” fasts, where she neither eats or drinks water the whole day ad then breaks her a day long fast at night after worshipping her husband and the moon. Their are numerable tales regarding the celebration of the festival, but the most popular one is the story of Savitri and Satyavaan in which the former brought back her husband from the clutches of death with her prayer and determination. Another such tale is of Veervati, the only sister of seven loving brothers. When the brothers could not bear to see her fasting the whole day they misled her into believing that the moon had risen. Veervati broke her fast and had food but soon got the news of her husband’s death. She prayed for a whole year and the Gods pleased with her devotion gave back her husband’s life.
In a country full of diversity and different cultures followed across the country, Same festival is being celebrated across the country, but in different ways, in their own way and rituals. Now a days, not only wives, but men also perform the whole day fasts and other rituals for their wives safety and long lives.
